Business Tips : MENTORSHIP Leaders have learned that people do not like dealing with uncomfortable truths of any size. Whether that truth is major (like the existence of God) or small (like miscommunication with a co-worker), people quickly suppress the truth, allowing themselves to be held blameless while the other party is held responsible for any issues. Consequently, most people never fulfill their leadership potential because they are too busy suppressing truth to learn from it. Wonder why people see others’ faults so clearly, yet have a hard time admitting their own? It’s hard. Imagine what could change in a person’s life if one could see their own areas of needed improvement as easily as they see others’. This is a VITAL part of the leadership journey and a HUGE part of a mentor’s role. People who run around blaming everyone but themselves for their current predicaments are hopelessly self-deceived through the repeated suppression of truth. Thankfully, few...

Business Tips : READING Reading was not my favorite thing to do. I would have rather been outside, playing ball, watching TV, playing video games, even working……rather than reading a book. I started hanging out with people that were avid readers. Not only were they much smarter and more knowledgeable…….but they made more money than I did. So early on in life, I tried to emulate those that I wanted to be like. In that time, it was about how to make more money. It was also the quickest way to get smarter. I was speeding up the process of making mistakes because I was able to learn from others in advance of making mistakes on my own. I had found a shortcut. I soon found out that it would change my life. The money came……but the knowledge is the only thing from the experience that is truly irreplaceable. If you want to change your life. Start reading. Learn how to read, not just putting letters together, but ask someone how to study a book, how to apply it, and what to do next. ...

Business Tips :                               SYSTEMS Check out the diagram to the left. Systems are just that. It is a way to organize thinking, action, and results in a process. That is a system. When you think of a system, you should think of putting something on autopilot. Putting someone on speed dial is a system. Setting your alarm is a system. Anything that makes your life easier, more efficient, and at the same time takes into account your relationships becomes a system. We like systems at our companies. Why? It’s because it becomes available for anyone to step in and continue the legacy that we have created. No one is irreplaceable. Not me, our management, our staff, administration, no one. We are all dispensable and technically so are our lives.   How many times have you looked at a calendar and thought, where has time gone? Remember though, what you bring to a system is your competence...

Business Tips : MANAGEMENT Management and leadership are often mentioned in the same sentence. However, leadership is looking forward with vision, dreams, and specific traits. It is important to separate the two terms. Management is looking at current results and determining the best way to move forward. Management is about building leadership in the company. To be a good manager, one must be constantly learning in order to take the business to the next level. The law of the lid says that a business can only rise to the level of leadership that those leaders have attained. Let’s talk about those levels – 1.       Learner – just getting started, “how to steps” 2.       Performer – has some time on the water, can do the task, getting better and better 3.       Orchestrator – can count on them, delegates and teaches how to do task while still doing it themselves, gets more done with the help of others ...

Business Tips : INFLUENCE The capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself John Maxwell says “Leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less.” So the question becomes, how can I gain influence? You can either borrow it or earn it. In most cases leaders borrow it before they earn it. That’s the way it has been in my life. As a young man, no one trusted me, no one believed me, and the circle of influence that I was running in didn’t lead to any borrowing of it…..no one had any. So when it came to influencing others that had more influence than I, I had to use someone else’s. A couple notes - borrowed influence cannot be shared, it’s like a bank note and it is owned by the lender. However, earned influence is like money in the bank you can spend. I go on this way to describe to you the power of influence. An influencer enlarges people, they help them navigate, they connect, empower, and they reprodu...

Business Tips : EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE When emotional intelligence first appeared as a buzz phrase in 1995, it made us aware of the missing link in a peculiar finding: people with average IQs outperform those with the highest IQs 70% of the time . This obviously shook up the psychologist’s balance of what “SMART” means. The capacity to be aware of, control and express one's emotions and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically is one definition. Another…. “Emotional intelligence is your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships.” It’s made up of 4 skills: ·          Self-Awareness  is your ability to accurately perceive your emotions and stay aware of them as they happen. ·          Self-Management  is your ability to use awareness of your emotions ...
